Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between Winston and other learning centers?
Winston Learning is a locally developed learning center created for Montgomery County after seeing the need for a place where real classroom teachers can help students continue to learn rather than a national chain that comes and try's to use a one size fits all approach. Our teachers are familiar with local exams and progress metrics such as MAP-M, MAP-R, and PARCC, as well as other in class assessments that are used in schools.
Is there an entrance or placement exam?
No. Our teachers will consult with the parents to see what the concerns are and use existing student data to help them meet the identified areas of need. Just as teachers in classrooms, teachers will work with students to differentiate and scaffold their learning to meet their learning goals.
What is the cost?
Sessions will cost similar to other similar services ranging from $30 to $50 per session, with discounts given to singing-up for multiple sessions.
Who is teaching the classes?
All teachers are certified Elementary School teachers who have been hired through references from other educators and have a proven instructional foundation. Teachers have in class experience and understand the latest initiatives and practices that exist for students. In addition, our curriculum developers are experts in the field of Literacy and Math in the Common Core. Teachers also go through a rigorous background check.
How large are the classes?
Our classes operate on no larger than 1 teacher to 10 student ratio. This is to ensure that the teacher has the ability to provide sufficient instruction and supports during the sessions, while also providing students an opportunity to collaborate with their classmates, as they do in their school classrooms.
